Supermoon 2017: Shock claim – December Full Moon is 'sign of END OF THE WORLD'

The December full moon will reach its point of perigee tonight, coming within 224,000 miles of Planet Earth.

But scores of so-called doomsday truthers are interpreting the annual astronomical event as a sign of the end times.

The shock claim comes after a .

One YouTuber going by the name of Amen Ra Has Returned, has claimed the supermoon is a “is a sign for the end of time.”

In a bizarre video uploaded to , the video maker alleges the Egyptian Sun-god Ra is making his return to Earth.

He explains in the video description: “The supermoon (12/3/17) December 3 2017 is a sign for the end of time on Earth. Amen Ra’s third sign.

“The god Amen Ra has returned on earth and is interpreting signs that will lead to the end of the world.

“The super moon is the third sign from the heavens.”

The full moon perigee is supposedly the third sign of Amen Ra’s coming, following the August Solar Eclipse and an invasion of snails in St. Petersburg, Florida.

December 3 also is meant to correspond with the the Biblical book of Revelations 12:3 which tells of the arrival of a “great red dragon” at the end of the world.

The King James Bible says: “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

“And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.”

But the apocalypse claim quickly deteriorates into the realm of snake oil, when the video links the Book of Revelations passage to the films Red Dragon and The Right Stuff.

Amen Ra Has Returned’s video says: “December means ‘ten’ like ‘red horns in revelation 12:3.

“Seven heads refers to Friendship 7 spacecraft with John Glenn.

“Now, what is the chance of this? Ed Harris played John Glenn in the movie.”

Despite what the video might claim, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest the supermoon is anything more than a regular astronomical event.

The perigee happens every year because Earth’s gravitational effects keep the Moon in an elliptical orbit which brings it closer and further away from the planet.

In fact, supermoon events regularly occur several times throughout the year. The last full moon perigee took place on November 14 2016, and two more will take place in January and February 2018.

None of the previous supermoons heralded the end of the world and it is unlikely this one will either.

Stargazers hoping to catch a glimpse of the supermoon will be able to see the Moon rise just after 4pm tonight. Click here to find out .

Dr Greg Brown at the Royal Observatory Greenwich explained in a video: “Our Moon travels the Earth on an orbit that takes 27.3 days to complete. That orbit isn’t perfectly circular – it’s slightly elliptical.

“And that means that at certain times during the orbit, the moon is slightly closer to the Earth than at other times.

“A Full Moon or a New Moon which occurs during the closest point in this orbit is known as a supermoon.”
