The astonishing claim was made by Dr Horace Drew, 61, after he studied the phenomenon, that is most prevalent in the west country, for several years.
Crop circles have been mysteriously appearing in fields across the UK for decades with increasingly complicated patterns.
They are also found further afield, including in Europe and other parts of the globe.
Dr Drew has a PhD in chemistry from the university Caltech, in Pasadena, California.
He now claims to have discovered the alien truth behind the bizarre formations.
It has been claimed for years that crop circles were made by UFOs landing in fields, but pranksters came forward in the 1990s and showed how they had been making them using planks of wood.
However, Dr Drew spent 20 years studying crop circles and claims they are hidden messages from alien species attempting to communicate with mankind.
He said mankind is not advanced enough to understand the complex messages – some which show “images of the future”.
Now based in Australia, Dr Drew said: “When humans want to talk with dolphins we put little bubble circles under the ocean with a generator.
“We watch the dolphins come up and play and investigate, and we study them.
“US Presidents have never said to a dolphin ‘take me to your leader, I want to sign a treaty with you’ and the extraterrestrials are not interested in making a treaty with us.
“They are ahead of us like we are ahead of the dolphins and the whales.”
He claims the strange arrangements have led to “at least one major breakthrough the discovery of a more advanced binary code than our computers currently use”.
Dr Drew also added some crop circles could receive messages from time travelling humans from 5000 years in the future while speaking at the UFO and Paranormal Research Society of Australia.
Nick Pope investigated UFOs and crop circles for the Ministry of Defence and is convinced the wheat field patterns are man made.
He said: “It was soon clear to me that while these patterns were often stunning and intricate, they were made by people.
“Some of these hoaxers plan their patterns on computers, navigate by GPS and wear night vision goggles.
“An extraterrestrial civilisation is unlikely to travel halfway across the cosmos, only to start making patterns in crop fields.”
